On the beyond great, nerdy online magazine I write for, GeekyKool, I do Pokemon Month in July. As you guys know, Pokemon is near and dear to my heart, since I was 11, giving me so much. So, I figured this month’s Top Ten on my site could reflect this celebration! ^_^ Fan theories have been around for a while. There are several fun ones, but I chose some of my favorites. They don’t have to be full of evidence; just ones that make me think, “Oh! Cool!” Also, if any theories from my youth have been confirmed as canon in Pokemon, then I will not be including them. Let’s catch some theories, trainers, and professors alike! =)
My Top Favorite Pokemon Fan Theories:
- Giovanni is Ash’s Real Father- Ah, a classic! If you break it apart using genetics or lore, it seems unlikely. And Poketubers have given valid reasons for other characters. However, I still like this theory. There is not any real evidence to support this other than the Pokemon musical where Ash’s mom confessed she dated Giovanni when they were younger… but, it was an American-made production, so not canon (Fun fact! The actor who played Giovanni here was the English voice actor for Maxamillion Pegusas for “Yu-Gi-Oh!”) This would have been a cool concept for story purposes. Plus, that would make Ash and Silver half-brothers! Oooh!
- Humans Are Also Pokemon- I first heard this theory years ago from MatPat and JWittz, who are epic. And it blew my mind! The evidence is there in the Sinnoh Library if you read the texts there. It states that back in the day, there were humans who lived with Pokemon, and married Pokemon because there ‘was no distinction between the two.’ There is also a story of a Pokemon who shed its skin to become human for a while. Humans in this world also can take hits exceedingly well! Firethrowers from Charizard. Thundershocks from Pikachu. In our world, getting hit with a fraction of this power would destroy us. And there are humans with psychic-like abilities AND a Human-like egg group for Pokemon! The facts on this one just add up. We are Pokemon who have more mental power and our partners bring the strength. Together, we make a great team!
- Ditto Was Made To Breed Pokemon Close To Extinction- It is a widely known (and I believe true theory) that Dittos are failed experiments of the ancestor to all Pokemon, the adorable Mew. There is a lot of proof to this. But, I heard this one too: Ditto was also made to help Pokemon close to extinction breed! What an amazing concept to keep our beautiful creatures alive! Ditto, you are the blob!
- The Pokemon War Killed Many Adults In The Pokemon World- Something I have noticed as I got older is that there are a lot of children running around, but towns are smaller and you see adults, yes, but not as many in comparison. Kids travel to become Pokemon trainers. Makes sense. You usually only have one parent when you are the main character. Yeah, Dad could be traveling or working long hours. But then Lt. Surge, the electric gym leader of the Kanto region, mentioned coming back from the war. Not a war, THE war! The Internet went nuts then that the games are set in a post-apologetic world. It may be a little far-fetched (ha!) but I dig this theory.
- Findable Items Aren’t Purposefully Left Behind- This one I just discovered recently and I think it is fascinating! I assume the items you find are silly kids not paying attention and dropping them. Or experienced trainers are leaving gifts for newer ones, paying it forward. Awww. Then, Pokemon: Legends Arceus came out, where Pokemon can attack you in-game and knock you out! Makes sense in a world of OP creatures we think 10-year-olds can capture to be our pets! But, what if these items were left by those who were attacked by Pokemon and…did not make it? And we know some Pokemon are monstrous in eating habits, kidnappers, or take souls! Heck, WE become ghost-type Pokemon when we die! And other Pokemon can collect or scatter the contents, or maybe you were not the first to pick this spot… It makes going in the tall grass more terrifying!
- Pokémon Go Cannibalizes Pokémon- There are some good Pokemon Go theories: it is the first game in the timeline. We are actually the bad guys (since we are separated by teams.) Maybe the three teams fighting WAS THE way Lt. Surge was in! Why exist Pokemon can be caught in the wild here, but not in our timeline unless revived by a fossil? And in order to make the unique Pokemon candies that eat to evolve and level-up, it is thoughts that when you give Professor Willow the extra Pokemon you do not want to keep, he grinds them up into those powerful candies! Horrifying, I know, but it seems too accurate to be true. And we can connect this to the Go being the first game in the franchise theory. Grinding Pokemon into candy for gain is awful. We eventually outlawed this, but on occasion, we will find a candy that levels up our Pokemon when consumed. It is called ‘rare candy,’ us no longer knowing its dark origins.
- Brock Was Cursed By A Medusa- Okay! I just discovered this one and I am IN LOVE! The reason Brock and his family (on his dad’s side) cannot open their eyes is because their line was cursed by a Medusa and if they open their eyes, those who look will turn into stone! This is why they are ROCK gym leaders for rocks cannot be turned into stone. Ha! It is zany, but makes sense and I am here for it!
- Team Rocket Created Weezing & Koffing- Another new discovery and this is rad! So Team Rocket wanted to make a ghost Pokemon to compete with psychics (one of the few defenses in generation one for psychics.) However, Team Rocket seems to have a love for poison types. Their attempt turned into a poison Pokemon, named Koffing. Smog is a human concept and the skull and crossbones are definitely a person-made symbol for toxicity. I like this idea.
- Ash is the chosen one- Ash Wednesday (my theory-) There are lots of theories on why Ash does not age. I tweaked one and made my own. Yes, it only works with Christianity ideas and Ash being his English name, but my Poke Crew and I enjoyed this idea. I FINALLY have figured out why Ash Ketchum does not age: Ash was born on Ash Wednesday in the holy week, and his mother gave him that name for that reason. Because of this honor, Arceus, the god Pokemon, was touched by this and blessed Ash at the start of his journey, making him never age so he can help, guide, and care about all the Pokemon in the world. The legendaries sense this “divine” heart and blessing in Ash, hence his many encounters with them. He also has many loyal “apostles,” or “followers” on his endless travels, spreading his love of Pokemon, for Pokemon…All hail Ash Ketchum: The “Son” of Arceus! Amen! xD
