- Where did you grow up? Did your childhood have any impact on your writing?
“I grew up in San Antonio Texas, which has a lot of culture in the city, great food and lots to do year round. I spent quite a few summers in England, mostly London, since my mom is from there.”
2. What were some of the first voices/impressions you did growing up?
“Growing up with a British mom, my first accent sounded somewhat like a hybrid between British and American. My dad is Mexican and my grandparents have thick accents so I grew up hearing how they talked and it really helps with accent work.”
3. What are you currently working on?
“I often can’t talk about what I’m currently working on due to NDA’s but I can talk about what is on pre-sale or just came out. I’m well known for Dark romance, but lately I’ve been getting more Romantasy which I have been loving! So I want to promote one of each and a new adult book I just finished recording that I’m super excited about!
“‘Beautiful Beast’ by Neva Altaj, the start of a new Mafia dark romance series. If you like your romance a little unconventional, with a little beauty and the beast trope this is for you. Dangerous man, clever woman, and attraction that can’t be denied.
“‘Winter Gods & Serpents’ by Wendy Heiss, The first in a new epic Romantasy Series. A story unlike anything you read. A dark and magical land filled with kingdoms at the brink of war, an arranged marriage, the only thing that may bring peace. Omens, and past sins. Secrets and betrayals. Twists and turns. I cannot sell you on this book enough!
“This last book I just finished recording this past week. It’s a New Adult book called ‘My Butterflies’ by B. Evans. College age love, and emotions. Messy love, young love, and everything feeling so strong and raw. The writing felt so real, it reminded me so much of myself in college. This book left me with all the feels. Definitely check it out!”
4. Who are your favorite characters you have ever voiced/acted as and why?
“Without a doubt every Demon from the Souls Trilogy by Harley LaRoux. Leon, Zane, and Callum. The book series starts with Her Soul to Take, and sassy demons are just my cup of tea. Each one has a different personality that I got to bring out. Leon was a little spicy and had a mouth on him. Zane was very humorous, always quick with a joke and a witty tongue. Callum was the oldest demon, he was the wisest yet somehow the softest while being the most powerful. Elegant in everway.
“Hades, from Learn my Lesson by Katee Robert. He let me be cruel yet sexy. He was so dry and clever and I felt like I could elevate this with my voice.
“Rion from the Fae of Alastriona Series by J.E. Reed. Particularly from book 3 A Fate so Cruel. His story is so tragic. He has so much anger and sadness but wants so badly to be part of something more. Wants to let his heart open but knows he can’t. A complex character that is a challenge and rewarding to voice.”
5. What are your warm-up methods before recording or auditioning?
“Hot black coffee and read a few paragraphs aloud, then get right into. I don’t really have much of a warm-up ritual.”
6. What was your path like until you found narration?
“Unfocussed. Lost. I went to college with no idea what I wanted to do. I actually got into a huge depression and left college before I could get my degree. I worked an office job and then found a way to upload a voice audition. I did and got a couple call backs. I did a few audiobooks and really enjoyed it and then about 8 months later, I quit my office job and went for voice over full time. Now I’ve been doing it full time for 11 years.”
7. How is your relationship with your publishing companies or authors you work with? What is the key to a good rapport with them?
“I have a great relationship with all my publishing companies, production companies, and authors. Emails with contacts and meeting people at events really helps solidify these relationships. I feel very fortunate that any of these wonderful people would choose to work with me and any chance I get to remind them I am grateful for the opportunity I take it.”
9. What actors/narrators/voice actions inspire you?
“Alan Tudyk, Mark Hamill, Kevin Conroy, Troy Baker, Nolan North, Tara Strong.”
10. How or where do you promote your work once the audiobook releases?
12. What type of book character or genre of audiobook do you dream of doing that you have not yet?
“I get asked this a lot and I really am very happy with working in the Romance Genre, I love it in fact. I have done other genres but there is something about romance that hits different. Also the subgenres allow us to play so many parts. If I want to do a mystery book, there’s a romance book for that, horror, sci fi, fantasy, you name it, romance has it!”
13. Tell us about your experience with duel and duet narration for audiobooks.
“I do mostly dual narrations and I love collaborating with my co narrators about voices. We usually send samples, and sometimes we’ll talk about certain scenes that we loved. It’s a lot of fun working with different people. I have quite a few regulars I work with and I feel you can tell we have really good chemistry and that’s why we get paired so often.
“I am getting a lot more duets, which I love. In fact, some of my older duals are now being redone as duets, still with me in them. Oftentimes in duets, I just record my portion and don’t hear my co narrator, it’s rare we do a same room record. I did do a same room record for Trick me Twice by Becca Steele with my co narrator Stephanie Nemeth Parker. We did it over discord and we really got to react to each other and it was so much fun.”
14. What do you do to relax?
“I like watching British Quiz shows like House of Games, Only Connect, and (not quite a quiz show) Taskmaster. I play video games. I love horror video games in particular, I scream out loud which makes my wife laugh all the time. And just spending time with my wife.”
15. If you could tell your 14-year-old self one thing, what would it be?
“Try to be more confident and keep with acting and voice lessons.”
17. Have you ever read a book/series that changed your outlook on life?
“I have definitely read books that stay with me for a bit, that hit my emotions, but I wouldn’t say anything that changed my life.”
18. Do you have a classic piece of literature or a classic author you are fond of?
“Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland by Lewis Carroll is an all time favorite.”
19. Any type of music that gets your writing juices flowing?
“2000’s Emo, particularly AFI, Lofi music, and piano music.”
21. Dog or cat person?
“I love all animals but I’m definitely more of a cat person. I have 2 myself.”
22. What do you want to eat right now?
“Soft serve chocolate and vanilla swirl ice cream.”
23. If you could be in any movie that has already been made, which one would it be?
“Probably the world of Scott Pilgrim.”
24. What is your favorite holiday or time of year?
“Winter, I like it cold.”
